OK, I'm Sold! Where do I start?
Wikipedia is a fantastic resource. The problem is that to be accurate and up-to-date it needs to be done by YOU!
Editing Wikipedia isn't just entering new content. It is also editing other peoples content, checking on accuracy and clarity and making it better. If you are looking for ways to help and get involved but not sure where to start then here are some suggestions.
There are several ways to go about identifying what you could write or what is needed to be written about. Here are some ideas.
Firstly, do a search for Occupational Therapy on wikipedia. What comes up? Do you feel this would provide the correct level of information to consumers and professionals? Here are some more specific pages and some questions to aid your thinking:
- Visit the Occupational_Therapist page as a starting point and consider:
- Offering a UK definition of occupational therapy
- Discussion of other models of practice
- Under: What occupational therapists do:
- Can you edit any of this?
- Can you add further information?
- Can you add some more links and/or references?
- Visit the Activities_of_daily_living Page. under: Activities of daily living
- Do you agree with this?
- Can you add anything further?
- Do you have any links or references to add?
- Visit the Occupational_therapy Page.
- Can you add anything from a UK perspective to the definition?
- Can you add a section on the History of OT in the UK?
- What is the education for OT in the UK?
- Is our philosophy the same?
- Do we work in the same way – or can we add a different dimension?
- What about role-emerging and non traditional roles that OTs are involved in?
Can you offer information to the heading in the list eg Homeless shelters – what are we doing here? - How about adding a section with a case study as a snapshot of your work?
- Can you add anything to the links and/or references?
Other Ideas:
There is no page for "Therapeutic Activity" maybe you could offer a new page with a definition and how OTs use this
There do not seem to be any links to Practice Placement information – maybe you could add a link to an existing page that discusses
occupational therapy. You could then consider offering information on how these are conducted and where students are placed etc.
Quick 6 step guide to editing..
Firstly; Don't Panic! Its Easy!
- Create an account. Go here and follow the steps.
- You can now login. Do so here, or look for the link at the top right of the wikipedia page (any page)
- Are you creating a new page or editing an old one? Not sure if your page exists already? Search for it.. Go to wikipedia. Find the box on the far left hand side just below the logo which says "search". Enter something short and snappy. See if it comes up. If it does then click on that page and get on with editing if it needs it! (see step 4) If you can't see the correct page or the page returned says "No article title matches" then you need to make a new page. Firstly read this: it should help to clear most things up. Click on the "create the page" link that comes up from the search results page and continue.. with editing (skip step 4!)
- Go to your page you want to edit. Click on edit. Its located right at the top of the page. Alternativley look for a heading in the document you want to edit and click on the "edit" link. Note the latter is easier to work with but does mean you can't play around with any of the other sections
- Use the buttons directly above the big text box to format your text. So highlight your text you want to make nice and different (e.g. Bold some text) and click the relevant button. If you hover your mouse above the button it will explain what it does.
- Once you have made your changes, add a little comment in the comment box (so others can tell what you have done) and click on "show preview" to see that it looks how it should. If thats OK then click the "save page" button
And now for some very quick formatting tips:
- Always link to other wikipedia pages if you can. Its like referencing just better!
- Reference, reference, reference! Use the "ref" button to do this just like you would a normal written article and place your reference in the angle brackets
- Comment your edit so we can tell what you have done!
- Have fun!
